It’s a GAME, not a challenge

#15daysofpainting starts 2 weeks from today!!!!!  JULY 15-29.  It’s an Instagram art game!  Read on for the Simple Rules, and Beginner Tips and Supply Suggestions……..

fullsizeoutput_55ea

I hope you’ll join us!!!  We had so much fun doing the #31days in May, and most of the players wanted to do it again.  So I thought an easy breezy shortened summer version would be just the ticket.  This is for anyone and everyone who wants to paint every day, alongside a worldwide group of other supportive players, for total newbies and seasoned artists alike!

Let’s be clear:  this is NOT a “challenge”.  It’s a GAME!

Why do I make that all-important distinction?  Because “challenge” feels like work, like competition, something hard, something stressful.  To me it feels divisive, not inclusive.  Isolating, and setting yourself up for failure.  And my intent with hosting these games is for them to be anything but those things!  I want everyone to play together.  You could say one of my life’s missions is to encourage people to HAVE FUN WITH THEIR CREATIVITY.  Having FUN with painting is not about comparisons or worthiness or “talent” or any of the other lies we tell ourselves, that prevent us from experiencing the pure joy of our creative souls.  It’s all about a forming a community based on sharing the fun of creative play and discovery.  So, are you in???

THE SIMPLE RULES

  1. Starting July 15, paint every day ON THE SAME PIECE, something, anything, for seconds or for hours, just do something to change your piece.
  2. Post a photo of your piece every day on Instagram, using the hashtag#15daysofpainting
  3. Follow me on Instagram @lisapalmerart, for updates and more tips for success!
  4. No comparing our efforts to anyone else — this is most important — everyone is on a different path and I hope we’ll genuinely celebrate ourselves and others.  And no self-deprecating comments on your own work, because that’s no fun!
  5. Because “life” happens, there are up to 2 days of grace during the 15 days.
  6. Search the hashtag #15daysofpainting every day to like/comment/encourage all the other players, and revel in the diversity of art that unfolds over the 15 days.  You’re gonna make some new artsy friends!  It’s quite amazing!!!

BEGINNER TIPS

I hear from a lot of folks who are intrigued and want to try their hand at painting, but either don’t know where or how to start OR have convinced themselves that they are just not “creative” or “talented.”  Well, that’s just plain not true!  Everyone is creative, they may just not have used those muscles lately, thinking they have to come out of the gate creating perfect masterpieces (whatever those are!), like all the “artists” they see.  Guess what?  YOU are an ARTIST!  Yes, I speak truth.  It’s all in your mindset.  Every young child is playful, will dive into paint and making things, without every thinking they are not good enough or talented enough — they just believe that they are.  In fact, it doesn’t even really enter their minds that they aren’t capable, because they live in the moment and they just do it, BECAUSE IT’S FUN!  So the secret is to go back to that time when you were a playful child and did fun things just because they were fun!  You didn’t care how your creations stacked up against anyone else’s.  You were completely enjoying life in the moment —  I know we can all get back to that place again.

And here’s another secret about “talented artists” — they didn’t start out that way!  Yes, even Picasso!!  They put in the hours, the months, the years, the decades of practice, practice, practice in order to become proficient in their art.  You wouldn’t expect to be a concert violinist the first time you picked up a violin, would you?  It’s the same for athletes, dancers, doctors, heck, ANY KIND OF PRACTICE — it takes lots of practice to become good, and the more we practice the better we get.  So stop stopping yourself and just start with us!!!

SUPPLY SUGGESTIONS

(note:  these are my personal preferences, to help get you started.  Every artist eventually figures out what they like best, there are a myriad of choices out there!)

  • Painting Surface:  for this #15daysofpainting game, you’re going to need a sturdy surface to paint on.  I recommend using a stretched canvas, of at least 18″x24″.  (I’m probably going to use a huge 36″x48″ canvas myself!)  Yes, even if you’ve never painted before, even if this is just an experiment for you, painting on the best kind of surface will set you up for success.  And help you feel like an artist 🙂  I don’t recommend canvas boards because they warp if they get too wet, and since you’ll be painting on this piece a lot of days, you’ll want a surface that will stay sturdy.  You can get stretched canvasses pretty cheaply at Michael’s, or Dick Blick or Hobby Lobby, etc., but my personal preference is to support my local art store — they need our support to stay in business!
  • Paints!  Well, I could write a book on this, but don’t worry, I won’t!  LOL!  The more pigment in the paint, the richer, deeper, more beautiful the colors.  So how do you know which paints have lots of pigment?  Well, the price is your first clue.  Those little 2 oz. craft paints are cheap because they have very little pigment.  I don’t recommend them for painting on canvas.  If you’re just starting out, try Liquitex’s Basics line, or Blick’s Studio Acrylics, good quality in tubes, rich colors.  Get yourself about 6 colors that you love, plus black and white.  Available at the same places as the canvasses above.
  • Paints, a step up:  Better quality would be the pigment-rich heavy body paints by Blick, Liquitex or Golden.  These can get pricy, but worth every penny if you want to produce truly beautiful art.  If you saw a side by side comparison of a painting painted with craft paints next to one painted with heavy body acrylics, you’d understand.
  • Paints, my personal favorite:  NovaColor paints, hands down.  Dreamy, creamy, rich and much less costly than the heavy body acrylics mentioned above.  Favored by professional mural artists, so you know they are highest quality in order to be seriously vivid and withstand the elements.  They come in jars and are the consistency of pancake batter, so not heavy and not fluid, somewhere in between.  You probably haven’t heard of them, and that’s why they’re less expensive.  They are made by and sold direct by a single small factory in Los Angeles, with none of the advertising/promotion/retail markups those other brands have.  I think they are far superior to those other brands.  My faves are their Transparent Yellow Oxide, Fluorescent Red, Blue Green, Quinacridone Magenta, and well, all of them really!  And no, I am not affiliated with them, I just love them and once I discovered them my painting game really improved.  They will send you a terrific handmade color chart if you ask via their email.  Here’s a link to order: NovaColor Paints
  • Brushes:   If you’re starting out, Michael’s has some good inexpensive assortment sets, like these:  Brushes Assortment .  Collecting great paintbrushes can quickly become a new shopping addiction, LOL, and besides my local art store’s selection, I like to buy my brushes from Rosemary & Co.  They are beautifully made tools, very reasonably priced, considering that they are handmade in England.  They are packaged so nicely too!  And c’mon, receiving a little box from England is pretty cool!!!
  • Everything else:   Again, it depends how you paint, but at the very least you’ll need a small bucket or two of water (put your brushes in water, don’t let them dry with paint on them!).  I use old plastic quart salsa containers.  And you’ll want to have a palette to squeeze out your globs of paint, with room to blend some of them.  Old cookie sheets work great for that, and you can usually find those at most thrift stores.  I also like to use paper palettes like these  for ease of clean-up.  Remember, you can reuse palettes over and over as the paint dries, just plop new paint over the dried stuff.  And you’ll need some paper towels or old rags (cut up old washcloths and t-shirts work great), not just to clean up spills and wipe your brushes on, but you can also wad them up and use them to paint/blend/texture on your canvas.  Depending on where you paint, you’ll probably want to protect your table with a plastic drop cloth or trash bags.  Having a dedicated painting space makes life so much easier, so you can leave out all your tools and supplies and not have to spend time cleaning up and setting up every day.

OK!!!  That’s it for now!!  Make sure and sign up for my newsletter for more tips and updates to come!  And invite your family and friends to join in on this #15daysofpainting game!  Kids tooooooooooooooo!!!!!

#31daysofpainting RECAP

IMG_9064“The Secret Keepers,” 2018, acrylic on 36″x36″ stretched canvas

First and foremost, I want to heap praise and gratitude upon everyone who participated in this game, in any way!!!  Whether it was as a full-bore participant (you know who you are, rockstars!), or as a partial participant (who still created gorgeous art, btw!) or as a much-loved and much-appreciated cheerleader/follower, we created a beautiful mutually supportive international online community!  That was the best and most unexpected gift of this game!!!  I am humbled by the responses I got to my little invitation, and I am thrilled to be in the company of an ever-widening group of diverse and incredible artists.

[for more details on the Instagram #31daysofpainting game in May, please read my last post, from April 28.  Also, please visit my Insta feed @lisapalmerart and the hashtag #31daysofpainting, to see more about it]

I promised a prize to everyone who successfully participated, and last week I was able to make good on that promise.  I created little 3×4 original abstract paintings and sent them to those artists.  It was surely a labor of love, in that I feel I know them all quite well at this point, even though the majority I’ve only met online.  Here are some of them:IMG_9116

I’ve been hesitant to wrap up the incredible #31daysofpainting journey with a blogpost, for many reasons.  Aside from the fact that my architecture work life has lately gotten very time-consuming, I’ve been hemming and hawing over how much I want to talk about the painting I produced during that game.  Because it became something so big, an unexpected wallop to my soul, and a thing I find hard to describe.  I was very intentional in NOT having any expectations as to what I would make, other than paint on canvas.  This was a meditative, intuitive practice for me, so healing and refreshing in that most of the time my left brain was completely turned off.  The fact that it took a turn from a colorful abstract to representational images surprised me.  But I just kept going.  It flowed through me.  It was pure magic.  I wasn’t leading it, I was walking beside it, and I didn’t question all the sharp turns it took.  Every day was a new day, until about day 25, when I finally understood what it was all about and why I was tasked with painting it.  So now I’ll attempt to walk you through the highlights, as they unfolded….

The first 6 days were all about playing with color and abstracts……

Then for no apparent reason a tree line appeared.  On day 10 a face and a river started to emerge.  By the end of day 13, the face became a mask…….

Then something very unexpected happened.  I turned the painting sideways (no idea why, I never ask why, right brain in charge) and painted a mysterious beautiful face, in a realistic manner, completely out of the style of the rest of the painting.  She appears to be weeping, sad or in pain.  She was so powerful that I realized the rest of the painting needed to evolve to match her poignancy.  So the mask became another face, this one looking sideways.  And the feelings of avoidance and secrecy became clear to me.  By the end of the third week, a third face started to emerge at the top, and a river runs through it all…….

The third face is looking down, in shame perhaps?  Again, no direct eye contact.  The river started splitting into waterfalls.  And on day 26 there’s a sunrise.  Now I knew what this painting was all about….

It’s an allegorical painting of darkness and light, of despair and hope.  It’s a timely representation about women who have been preyed upon, and yes, it’s dedicated to all my fellow #metoo sufferers.  Look away, look down, cry, deny, pretend it’s not happening, living with shame and secrets, not being believed or taken seriously, isolated, loss and disassociation, living with sadness, confused, losing jobs, feeling powerless, being at the mercy of others, losing friends, losing family, not wanting to rock the boat, afraid to speak truth, afraid to trust, not wanting be be open and vulnerable.  Living in a world of beauty while feeling detached and not present to it.  Yet being connected to all the other people who have been prey, by a long endless river.  This is no way to live.

Now that the theme was clear to me, I had a few more days to add to the painting to make sense of the story.  Because it is also a story of hope, wisdom, life, freedom, connection and empowerment.  A new day.  Trusting our innate wisdom while existing in our shadow side, so an owl and the moon emerged.  The waterfalls became ferocious and dynamic, symbolic of our capacity for resilience and redemption.  And finally, on the last day, a beautiful red rose right in the center, a symbol of love, beauty and martyrdom.

WHOA!!!!  Not my usual subject matter.  I tend toward uplifting images, happy and poignant.  I paint intuitively, attempting to express feelings of positivity and beauty.  But this became so much bigger than my usual.  It is a very important piece for me, definitely a touchstone in my creative journey.  Cathartic and healing.

Thank you to my angel friend D’Wana, who named this painting before I even explained to her what it was about.  Because she knows.  I am beyond grateful that the #metoo movement has emerged, FINALLY, in my lifetime.  Because it truly has become a cultural shift in our society.  To me it is the greatest revolution of my lifetime.  I hope and pray ALL victims of sexual predators feel empowered to speak up now, in the moment, before or during or after assault or harassment, speak to someone they trust, now that the veil of secrecy has been lifted.  In my day, when I was preyed upon, I was not believed, or I was told to get over it and just “move on”.  Basically, just shut up about it.  I estranged myself from certain branches of my extended family, I left good jobs (20 years apart, mind you!), my life was upended a couple times, and I suffered in mostly silence alongside other women who, like me, knew no one cared.  There was no recourse, no moral punishment of the aggressors by our communities.  It was the way things were, the way they had “always” been, and we were expected to accept it (“boys will be boys”).  We have seen so many examples in the media of brave men and women who are speaking the truth, reclaiming their power, seeking some justice, even years later, and even in the face of some cynical criticism. The truth is so much more powerful than any idiotic punditry now, and for that I am especially grateful.  The fact that people are being believed and accepted, and that some of the perpetrators are feeling the power of justice finally served, well, I am in awe.

May the light of truth continue to spread its beauty over all of us!!!!

And so in celebration, please enjoy this slide show of the entire 31 days of the evolution of my painting…………..

Come Play in May!!!

IMG_8463

You are cordially invited to JOIN ME in doing something easy and fun during the month of May:  a simple painting practice where we work on ONE PAINTING for the entire month!!  #31daysofpainting.  It is something I’ve been planning on doing quietly, on my own.  But then I thought, what the heck, how much more fun it would be to do it alongside others, to cheer each other on and see all the different directions it takes us!  Think how rich and interesting this can be.
It’s very simple:  paint every day, a little or a lot, on the same canvas (or board or whatever you choose), just make sure to make at least one mark every day to alter the piece.  I saw this done a few years ago on Instagram, and I’ve wanted to do it myself ever since.  I think not only will it be interesting to see how things go over the course of the month, as my mood changes, but to do it alongside others will help with being accountable to keeping with it.
There is no hidden agenda here, nothing I’m trying to sell you.  In fact, I’m going to mail all the completers a cool prize (or prizes!) at the end!!  Consider it an invitation to a party!!!
Let’s not call it a challenge, let’s call it an INSTAGRAM CELEBRATION, ok?  I don’t want to set it up as something to be stressful or laden with comparisons.  This is open to everyone, beginners and experienced artists alike.  I want everyone to feel like we’re all just playing together, in any way we each want to.  SOUND FUN????

And so in that spirit, here are THE RULES”

  1. Paint every day, something, anything, for seconds or for hours, just do something to change your piece.
  2. Post a photo of your piece every day on Instagram, using the hashtag#31daysofpainting
  3. Follow me on Instagram @lisapalmerart, for updates and more tips for success!
  4. No comparing our efforts to anyone else — this is most important — everyone is on a different path and I hope we’ll genuinely celebrate ourselves and others.
  5. Because “life” happens, there are up to 6 days of grace during the 31 days, in order to stay eligible for the final prize.

TIPS & SUGGESTIONS
  • Over the next few days, gather your painting mediums and tools, and the surface you will use (the bigger and sturdier the better, imho).
  • Try to have a designated painting spot with easy access where you can leave out all your materials so you can get to work quickly.  Time spent setting up and putting stuff away can take away from your resolve, if time is limited.  Make it a nice place to land, near natural light if possible, with candles and music, or whatever feels good.  Hey, we’re worth it!!!
  • Subject?  Or not?  Entirely your choice.  Whatever floats your boat.  I’m going to start out playing with abstract painting, but who knows what I’ll end up with?  I’ll let the paint and the days steer me.  Having no expectations sets me up for a joyful and stressless experience.
  • If you’re away from your space on any day, you can still stay connected to your painting.  Have a small sketchbook with pens/pencils/watercolors with you, doodle ideas for your painting for when you return to it. Or maybe even create little sketches/pictures that you can use as mixed media additions to your painting (adhere papers to your piece with gel medium).
  • Remember that painting is a process, so that each day will most likely not produce a thing of absolute beauty!  We call is the messy middle or the ugly middle, LOL.  Don’t get discouraged, just keep going, paint over things you don’t like, don’t get stuck trying to fix every little thing.  The more unattached you are to the outcome, the more joyful this will be!!!  Be bold!  Have fun!  Pretend you’re a 5-year-old who’s excited just by the wonder of being free and playful.
  • Seriously, NO COMPARING!  There is no bigger joy-sucking roadblock than comparing ourselves to others.  It’s kind of ridiculous, when you really think about it, isn’t it?  Because everyone is on their own creative journey, with different levels of experience and individual tastes.  We are all unique, and we should celebrate that about ourselves!  I would also beg you not to make self-deprecating comments about your own work.  Find the beauty in it, it is always there. Let’s stay positive and feel good about THIS CELEBRATION!
  • Make sure to search the #31daysofpainting hashtag every day to see what others are doing, and cheer them on by doling out likes and comments generously!

At the end of the 31 days, everyone who has posted at least 25 daily progress photos on Instagram, with the #31daysofpainting hashtag, will be rewarded with a cool prize, or prizes, sent to you in the mail!!  But really, the reward will be your own creation, won’t it?  My hope is that this will inspire you to keep going, keep reaching, keep trying, keep getting yourself into the sweet flow of of creativity, to let your soul know you are listening!

I CAN’T WAIT TO GET STARTED!!!!!!!

Springtime in Lisaville!

Hey peeps!  Happy Spring!!!  We’re “enjoying” torrential spring showers at the moment, which don’t make it easy to go out and feed all our critters, but we really appreciate how essential this water is for the health and beauty of our ranch.  Everything is so GREEN!!!

IMG_7859.JPG

You may have noticed a little re-design of my website, now officially called lisapalmerart.com.  I’m working on aligning my vision with my visuals here, and DIY-ing it all myself, which is a huge challenge for one so un-techy as me!  In between raising baby goats, working on many re-builds for Santa Rosa fire victims (that’s my day job, if you didn’t know, I’m an architect), caring for relatives, and a zillion other things I’m responsible for, I grab a little time here and there to work on my pet soul projects, which are making art and building this art business.

IMG_7515

As much as I yearn for a simple life, I have come to realize that word means something different for me.  Because I also have a rich and very full life, and most of it I wouldn’t change for anything.  So simplicity is more in my attitude toward how I approach each day, how I let go of extraneous stuff (physical and emotional), how I look for the essence of whatever I’m experiencing, how I constantly practice gratitude, and how I snap myself back into the moment when I start going down that path of overwhelm.  I appreciate minimalism so much, but that will never be me, and I am finally at peace with that.  As a young architecture student, I used to kneel at the altar of minimalism, but truth be told, it quickly bored me.  Just not how I’m wired.  So the struggle has been how to achieve the calm peaceful feelings of minimalism, while living a complex life.  How do you handle your own busy life??  I’d love to hear about your successes and tips!!

Here’s what’s coming up this spring in the Joy Barn……….

APRIL 21 MOVING PAINT WORKSHOP and APRIL 22 MOVING COLOR WORKSHOP

IMG_E7756

I’d LOVE to have you join us!!!!  These workshops are independent of each other, but of course one informs the other.  So come to one or both, and join a group of people who want to have fun and learn and PLAY with paint and color here with me!  These workshops are for curious “non-artists” and experienced artists alike.  Read all about them under the CLASSES & WORKSHOPS tab above.

Coming soon ——– I’ll be listing my paintings here in my SHOP !!!  As soon as I figure out how, LOL!  For now, you can purchase those pretty little practical notebooks through the link in the SHOP.  Stay tuned for original art!!!!!!!

What are you doing on the 24th?

What are you doing the Saturday after next?  I hope you have something fun planned.  If not, you’re invited to come join us here in the Joy Barn in Duncans Mills, California, for an all-day art painting party!!!!  It’s called the MOVING PAINT WORKSHOP.  There’s just a couple spots left!!!!

IMG_5970

We’re going to learn and try out lots of acrylic abstract painting techniques, all without brushes!  We have a group of artists coming ranging from never-painted-before to very-experienced-and-accomplished.  So yes, if you’re reading this and thinking, “oh, that sounds like fun, but I can’t do that,” let me tell you that YES YOU CAN.  If you consider yourself “uncreative”, “non-artistic”, “incapable” or whatever other un-truths you’re telling yourself, I am going to prove you wrong.  Not only will you create things that will make your heart sing (and you may be singing out loud, cuz we love our music in the Joy Barn), you will leave with a renewed belief in yourself and inspiration for all the creative possibilities that lie ahead for you.  Plus, have a fun time with a group of new-found friends!

IMG_E4708

This is the first time this workshop is being offered, so grab your spot at the introductory price that’s 45% off!  Open to anyone from age 14 on up, this is for EVERYBODY.  Read more about it HERE and sign up for it OVER HERE .

And if you can’t make it on the 24th, consider coming to the next MOVING PAINT WORKSHOP on Saturday, April 21.  I’m also offering the MOVING COLOR WORKSHOP the very next day, Sunday, April 22.  This is going to be a super fun weekend of 2 full-day painting workshops.  Take one, or both!  They each stand alone.  Make a weekend of it, just like some of those signed up, some of whom are coming from out of town, are doing.  There are still spaces left, and I don’t want you to miss out!  Read all about them through those links.  This is a very affordable way to jump into painting, or to expand your skill set if you’re already an accomplished artist.  We can never have too much fun, too much camaraderie with kindred souls, or too much new inspiration!

Things are green and gorgeous now on the ranch, thanks to our winter rains.  Like our dogs are showing you — hurry and sign up while there are still spaces left!!!

Announcing May Soul Restoration Workshop

Hey Friends!!!  Here’s another way……..

In these types of fearful and tough times, most of us tend to separate ourselves, go silent, ruminate, and disconnect.  Well, I happen to believe that these times require the exact opposite response, in order for us to live healthy, peaceful and purposeful lives.  Now, MORE THAN EVER, we need the kind of self-care that circles and connects and shares and gathers.  We need to do this not only for ourselves, but for our families and our communities.  Taking care of ourselves, our souls, first is what will heal and inspire and spread the messages of all that connect us all on this planet.

And so I invite you to join us the weekend of May 4-6, 2018, here on our gorgeous ranch in the redwoods of Northern California, for a beautiful gathering of women who want to connect and learn and share and heal and play and laugh and love life, by doing the incredible Soul Restoration course together, with me, Lisa Palmer, as your guide.  THIS IS  A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE!!!

We will circle in a safe and sacred circle, here in the Joy Barn.  Talk, listen, write, journal, do a bit of (easy) art that let’s us know our souls are listening.  Eat yummy food, breathe crisp clean air, marvel at the beauty of nature.  We will gather with purpose, form lifelong connections, and hold each other as we release the lies that keep us from living our soul’s true purpose.  This is THE BEST GIFT you can give yourself, your family, your community and the world.

COME JOIN US!!!  We have a spot waiting for you!!!  PLEASE CONTACT ME WITH ANY QUESTIONS!!!!!

Are you ready for a TUNE-UP?

Well, I’ve got just the ticket for you!!  It’s been a lonnnnnnnnnng year, hasn’t it?  So much turmoil and loss in our world.  A lot of the time it’s hard to keep a positive hopeful outlook.  Especially when you’re dealing with rough stuff in your own life and/or still unable to move forward from past hurts.  Life can just feel so difficult and disconnected.  I know that feeling all too well!!!!

And there’s something else I know very well:  the SOUL RESTORATION curriculum holds the key to what you can learn to soothe your soul.  And I’m teaching it!!!!  Here in my Joy Barn!!!!  Over a very affordable 3-day Veteran’s Day weekend in November!!!  I’m a Certified Instructor of this life-changing course, which changed my life.  I have taught this course to women here, on our ranch, and the basic concepts to hundreds of women staying in homeless shelters — IT WORKS!!!!!  As I have witnessed over and over and over.  And I continue to work it’s lessons when things start to go south in my own life, or when I’m feeling stuck and just blah. IT NEVER FAILS TO RESTORE MY HOPE AND POSITIVE OUTLOOK ON LIFE!

We have a fabulous group of women coming to connect and circle on this magical weekend, and we’d LOVE for you to be a part of it!!!!  Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have ANY questions! xoxo
